A naturally formed raised bank along the side
of a river. When a river overflows its banks,
the rate of flow in the flooded area is less
than that in the channel, and silt is
deposited. After the waters have withdrawn
the silt is left as a bank that grows with
successive floods. Eventually the river,
contained by the levee, may be above the
surface of the surrounding flood plain.
Notable levees are found on the lower reaches
of the Mississippi in the USA and the Po in
Italy.
